This delicious soda bread recipe is so quick and easy to bake! The acid in the buttermilk reacts with the bicarbonate of soda and creates the rise, meaning there is no yeast or proving time required! This is a great one for kids as you its so simple, and will be out the oven and ready in under an hour!

Serves 6-8


450g malted brown flour
2 tsp salt
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
142ml buttermilk
150ml water


Pre-heat the oven to 200C.

Mix together the flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda.

Whisk the buttermilk/sour cream with the water and stir this mixture into the flour. More water may be needed to make it into a soft dough.

Knead until the surface is smooth then put onto a greased baking sheet. Cut a crisscross into the dough to form four sections and bake for about 30 minutes in the pre-heated oven until cooked.

Leave to cool, divide, and tuck in!
